European Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office (EPPO)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0European Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office<\/a>,\u00a0the independent public prosecution office of the European Union,\u00a0constitutes a central pillar of the EU\u2019s anti-fraud architecture.\u00a0It\u00a0seeks\u00a0to protect the EU budget from criminals and\u00a0facilitate\u00a0the recovery of damages, making a lasting contribution to the prosperity, stability and security of the Union and its citizens.<\/p>\n

The EPPO has been operational since\u00a01 June 2021.\u00a0It is composed\u00a0of two levels \u2013 the Central Office in Luxembourg, which\u00a0consists of\u00a0the\u00a0European Chief Prosecutor, European Prosecutors (one per participating Member State), the Administrative Director and support staff, as well as decentralised offices in all participating Member States, where European Delegated Prosecutors\u00a0investigate, prosecute and bring to judgment crimes within the EPPO\u2019s mandate.<\/p>\n

Nikolaos Paschalis was appointed as European Prosecutor from\u00a0Greece in\u00a0June 2023, and\u00a0has been in office since July 2023.\u00a0The EPPO\u2019s office in Greece\u00a0is located in\u00a0Athens\u00a0and currently employs 10 European Delegated Prosecutors, as well as financial investigators and National European Delegated Prosecutors\u2019 Assistants.\u00a0As\u00a0members\u00a0of the prosecution\u00a0services\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Hellenic Republic,\u00a0European Delegated Prosecutors\u00a0have the same powers as national prosecutors. Nonetheless,\u00a0they\u00a0maintain\u00a0full independence from Member States\u2019 authorities when acting on behalf of the EPPO.\u00a0Published every year, the EPPO\u2019s Annual Report\u00a0features\u00a0detailed statistics on the operational activities\u00a0of the EPPO in Greece.<\/p>\n

The Council\u00a0Regulation (EU) 2017\/1939 of 12 October 2017, implementing enhanced cooperation on the establishment of the European Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office<\/a>\u00a0('the EPPO Regulation'), sets the basis for the functioning of the EPPO.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Directive (EU) 2017\/1371 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 5 July 2017 on the fight against fraud to the Union's financial interests by means of criminal law<\/a>\u00a0('the PIF Directive')\u00a0defines the crimes within the EPPO\u2019s mandate. These include:<\/p>\n
